Commonplaces

The discourse community this belongs to are jeep owners or people that 4wheel and know about jeeps. The shared goal or purpose of this community is off roading vehicles. The language strengthens the community because its english. The values that the community holds is off roading and four wheeling. This commonplace image is a cover on the back of a tire. You pretty much see these on Jeeps so yes, the community and the commonplace (the company jeep) are valuing the same thing, offroading. To me the meaning of this means because it is on a jeep, or you're driving a jeep "life is good" but I think this could be used in other ways or ideas because it is so positive and is saying simply life is good. Life could be good for a lot of reasons not just this.

Logos/ethos/pathos

What I think logos is is reasoning or logic towards an argument. Ethos means the morale or the ethics that the argument chooses. Pathos just means that the argument has some form of emotion.

Ads for essay 1

One of the ads I am thinking about doing is for the brand Axe. It is a mens fragrance and deodorant line. The commercial can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6rAQHa1gmc. The commercial shows a guy spraying axe on his body, then putting on a shirt, taking it off and letting the girls smell it. After the woman smell the shirt that has the product on it they faint, or somehow change their behavior. In the commercial 2 of the girls end up getting into a fight over the scent. The ads are basically implying that if you wear their product, girls like the ones in their commercials will be drawn to you.
Another ad I am considering is an older ad for Salem cigarretes. This ad can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86lYG1V2-n4. The commercial makes smoking their cigarettes seem so fun, and not to metion great for you because it leads you to think you are getting fresh air and that it "softens your breath".

WWII posters

The World War 2 poster I picked was "United we win" by Alexander Liberman.
First I signed into blackboard. Then I clicked on Rhetoric Ads. Then I clicked
on the link titled WWII posters. After that I clicked the button that said
"click here to enter". Then I clicked on the link "United we win" and right
away the first poster caught my eye.
The poster has two men in black and white. They are leaned over using tools to
fix something. They both look pretty young somewhere between eighteen and
twenty five. They both look like they are Anglo. What really makes the poster
stand out is the American Flag behind them. It stands out because it is in
color and the rest of the poster is in black and white. At the bottom of the
poster in huge gray capital block letters says united we win.
I think that this picture is supposed to stand out to men. The meaning is
showing that if we work together as a team that we can succeed. The poster is
trying to say that if the men in the army work together and continue to stay
united like these two men in the poster are demonstrating that we can win the war.
