One of the ads I am thinking about doing is for the brand Axe. It is a mens fragrance and deodorant line. The commercial can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6rAQHa1gmc. The commercial shows a guy spraying axe on his body, then putting on a shirt, taking it off and letting the girls smell it. After the woman smell the shirt that has the product on it they faint, or somehow change their behavior. In the commercial 2 of the girls end up getting into a fight over the scent. The ads are basically implying that if you wear their product, girls like the ones in their commercials will be drawn to you.
Another ad I am considering is an older ad for Salem cigarretes. This ad can be found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=86lYG1V2-n4. The commercial makes smoking their cigarettes seem so fun, and not to metion great for you because it leads you to think you are getting fresh air and that it "softens your breath".

Matt-
ReplyDeleteThese are both terrific ads to critique and analyze. I don't know which to suggest. Do you have a strong feeling either way?
The cigarette ad is interesting not only in how historically situated it is, but also how it uses gender in an interesting way. It is marking Salem as a feminine, fresh, "natural" cigarette. Think about that in contrast to the Marlboro Man. The use of imagery, the play of written and spoken text, and the use of music make the ad really interesting.
As for the Axe commercials, I truly hate the ads for how they treat women, but think they are great to analyze. Consider the link in this ad between sex and violence and the depiction of women as competitors for male attention. Also, women are rendered powerless to their sexual desires and their desire is being sold as a product here. The woman at the end of the ad is basically boxing up women's lust and loss of control to sell to Axe commercials.
That being said, both of these ads would be lots of fun to analyze.
I can't wait to see what you choose-

I think you should go with the cigarette commercial because nowadays we don't see those kinds of commercials and it's interesting to see cigarette's portrayed in a good way.
ReplyDeleteGreat choices, I really like the old Salem ad. One cool thought to consider is if they had all the knowledge that we have today, would they still make the commercial like that? I think you can pull a lot of contrast between then and now as far as how we percieve it, but it's only a thought. Really cool!
